Lent - Reflect, Repent and Renew

Through this 40-day journey that leads us to the cross, we are called to Reflect, Repent and Renew in preparation for Easter, and this mirrors the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness, fasting and being tempted. Lent is an intentional discipline that we are called to observe.

Just as we spring clean our houses, clearing out those corners that haven't seen the light of day since maybe last Lent? So, we are called to clear space in our hearts for God, stripping away the distractions and the unnecessary 'stuff' that fills our lives.

We are led into a spiritual wilderness, and whether we give something up or take on a new discipline, we are creating space to reflect on God's word for us. In the silence we hear God's voice above the noise of the world around us.

Through Lent we are called to repent, a word that actually means to 'turn around'. God doesn't want to shame us for the times when we have strayed, rather He wants us to change direction and renew ourselves, finding a new way to live following His example. God is not looking for perfection in us; we come to God as we are and through His grace, we are washed clean.

Traditionally we give up something for Lent, something that we enjoy - chocolate

Or more often these days I hear of people taking a break from social media. This is not to deprive ourselves but a reminder to pray and use that time to talk to God. Maybe rather than 'Giving up something' we should 'take up something new' - spend time in prayer or bible study, do random acts of kindness, or maybe donating an item a day to the food bank

Either way doing something different is a reminder that our strength comes from God- not chocolate!! Or whatever your guilty pleasure happens to be.

As we journey through Lent and set our sights on the cross let us remember that Lent is the season to draw closer to God, to turn away from the distractions of the world, to strengthen our faith and to renew our lives in His service.

"Lord, prepare our hearts during this Lenten season, help us to turn away from distractions and turn towards You. Create in us clean hearts and renew a right spirit within us, Amen”

May God bless you through your Lenten journey,

Julie
